Daily Ellen Browser Extension Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2025-01-01

This Privacy Policy describes how the Daily Ellen browser extension (the "Extension") handles information when you use it. We are committed to collecting and using only the minimum amount of data necessary to provide the core functionality, and we comply with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy.

1. Information we collect

Depending on how you use the Extension, we may process the following types of information:

  • 1.1 Selected text on the current page (processed locally)
When you select a passage on a supported website and open the extension’s editor, the Extension reads the selected text locally in your browser in order to render it onto the quote image canvas. This text is used only within the current page and current session. By default it is not sent to our servers, unless you explicitly choose to save a quote image (see below).
  • 1.2 Quote and template usage data
When you click "Save HD image", the Extension sends a record to the Daily Ellen backend including: the quote text you created, the associated book and chapter information, the selected template ID, and the background image key or URL. This allows us to show your generated quote works in the extension or Daily Ellen service.
  • 1.3 Device-level anonymous identifier (UUID)
To understand usage and prevent abuse, the Extension generates a random anonymous device identifier (UUID) on first run and stores it only in the browser's chrome.storage.local. This identifier does not contain your name, email, account details, or any other information that directly identifies you.
  • 1.4 Basic usage and heartbeat data
The Extension periodically sends a lightweight heartbeat to the Daily Ellen servers that includes only the anonymous device identifier, the extension version, and a timestamp. This helps us measure active usage and monitor service stability.

2. What we do not collect

We do not collect or store the following information via the Extension:

  • Your passwords, email address, phone number, or other login credentials.
  • Your full browsing history across websites.
  • Form contents, payment information, or cookies from other websites, except where strictly required to display the current page and its selected text.
  • Any data for the purpose of building advertising profiles or serving personalized ads.

3. How we use your information

We only use the information described above for the following purposes:

  • To render the selected passage onto the quote image canvas in the Extension.
  • To save quote records that you explicitly choose to create in the extension (synced to the Daily Ellen service when applicable).
  • To understand how the Extension is used and improve its reliability and user experience.

4. Storage and retention

  • Local storage
The anonymous device identifier (UUID) is stored only in your browser's local storage. You can remove it at any time by uninstalling the Extension or clearing your browser data.
  • Server-side storage
Quote records that you explicitly save (via "Save HD image") are stored in Daily Ellen's backend databases so they can be displayed and managed over time. We apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect this data.

5. Sharing and third parties

We do not sell your data to third parties. We may share limited information only in the following situations:

  • To comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or enforceable governmental requests.
  • To protect the rights, property, or safety of Daily Ellen, our users, or the public, where disclosure is necessary and lawful.
  • With trusted service providers (for example, cloud hosting or storage providers) who process data on our behalf and are bound by confidentiality and security obligations.

6. Your choices and controls

  • Uninstall the Extension
You can stop all data collection and transmission by uninstalling the Daily Ellen Extension from your browser's extension management page.
  • Choose not to save quotes
If you only want to preview how the quote image looks and do not want it stored on our servers, simply do not click the "Save HD image" button.

7. Children's privacy

The Extension is intended for general audiences and is not directed specifically at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the Extension. If you believe that we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will promptly investigate and take appropriate action.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and may provide additional notice in the Extension listing or on our website. Your continued use of the Extension after any changes become effective means that you accept the updated policy.
